Arms: global trends, exports and control
BICC investigates global trends in arms expenditures, number of troups and militarization.
In its Annual Report, BICC publishes facts and figures on trends of global (dis-)armament, military expenditures, military and paramilitary personnel and violent conflicts. A major focus lies on the implications of military structures and capacities for human and economic development. In particular, BICC's annual Global Militarization Index (GMI) represents the relative weight and importance of the military apparatus of a state in relation to society as a whole.
BICC makes the connection: arms exports, development assistance, human rights.
With its data base www.ruestungsexport.info (external link) BICC verifies in how far 170 countries do justice to the EU- Code of Conduct on Arms Exports. BICC also provides basic data on armaments, military and security for important recipient countries of German arms exports. Goal of the data base project, which is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is to improve the information base in the discussion about German arms exports. The web-based Geographic Information System (WebGIS) facilitates an in-depth analysis and interpretation of the data base.
BICC lobbies for global arms control.
As one of the five leading peace and conflict research institutes in Germany, BICC actively participates in the discussion on global arms control, amongst others in the framework of the State of Peace Report (Friedensgutachten (external link) ). Amongst others, BICC supports the international appeal "Bring the Adapted CFE Treaty into Force". BICC hat invited international experts, such as Prof. Hans Blix to participate in the debate on Iranian uranium enrichment.
