Migration and Conflict

BICC participates in an international multi-year EU-research project "Diasporas for Peace: Patterns, Trends and Potential of Long-distance Diaspora Involvement in Conflict Settings (DIASPEACE)".

Taking the region of the Horn of Africa as an example, new insights will be gained into diaspora activities in their countries of origin and residence countries as well as on a transnational level.

BICC studies the nexus between African migration and security.

In February 2008 BICC organized an international conference, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) "The Security - Migration Nexus. Challenges and Opportunities of African Migration to EU Countries". The participants discussed the situation in their home countries, the influence of diaspora organizations on conflicts and peace processes, living conditions and security needs of migrants in European countries in particular. A further topic was the effects of diaspora activities on the security interests of the host countries.

BICC discusses challenges of migration in Sub-Sahara Africa.

In February 2009, the international conference "Migration and Displacement in Sub-Saharan Africa - The Security - Migration Nexus II" , supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will take place in Bonn. In view of the growing number of IDPs and increasing forced migration, this conference will discuss in particular the causes of forced migration in Sub-Saharan Africa, humanitarian, social and legal consequences for those concerned, the role of forced migrants in complex (post-)conflict situations and situations of need.

BICC studies African diaspora in North Rhine-Westphalia.

On behalf of the Ministry for Intergenerational Affairs, Family , Women and Integration of the Land North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), BICC presented a concept paper on the "Role of the African diaspora in conflict processes" and carried out an expert workshop on academic methodologies in diaspora research in 2007.

BICC participated in the 13th International Metropolis Conference 2008 in Bonn.

BICC held a workshop entitled: African diaspora groups as facilitators of peace and development. The Workshop sought to investigate in what ways African diaspora groups in Europe get involved in peace processes in their countries of origin as well as their common ground and possible scope of cooperation with European NGOs and development agencies.
