Resources and Conflict

BICC studies the nexus between natural resources and conflict.

With the Resource-Conflict-Monitor, BICC-experts have developed a data base of 90 resource-rich countries. This data base provides information on conflicts, resource governance and their involvement in international agreements. BICC has also published studies, concept papers and short studies on natural resource governance, such as water governance.

BICC gives research support to the campaign Fatal Transactions.

It supports activities of its partners, such as NIZA (Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa), Pax Christi Netherlands, the Dutch NOVIB-Oxfam and IPIS (International Peace Information Service, Belgium) with public events and by providing information and literature on the FT-website (external link). It also organizes international conferences and expert talks.

BICC lobbies and educates on the topic of ‘natural resources and conflict’

The Fatal Transactions campaign, with the financial support of the European Union, is a network of different European and African organizations, such as BICC, NIZA (Netherlands Institute for Southern Africa), Pax Christi Netherlands and IPIS (International Peace Information Service, Belgium). It believes in the fact that the natural richness of Africa, can be a motor behind development and stability instead of a source of conflict. It lobbies for a fairer use of natural resources as a contribution to sustainable development and peace in Africa. Since 2007, BICC has been coordinating the Fatal Transactions campaign in Germany.
BICC is also actively involved in the action alliance ‘Natural Resources for a Fairer World’ (Aktionsbündnis „Rohstoffe für eine gerechte Welt“) which offers a touring exhibition www.rohstoffgerechtigkeit.de (external link)) as well as in the project group ‘Oil project Chad / Cameroon’ (Erdölprojekt Tschad / Kamerun - www.erdoel-tschad.de (external link) -).

BICC is associated member of GMOSS (Global Monitoring of Stability and Security).

Amongst other activities, BICC has edited and published BICC brief 37 “Monitoring Environment and Security – Integrating concepts and enhancing methodologies” in cooperation with GMOSS.
