BICC Photo Exhibition at the African Union
On 21 January 2008, Peter Croll, Director of BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion), opened the BICC photo exhibition “Small Arms—A Global Threat” at the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa. The exhibition is shown there from 15 January until 15 March 2008.
“In this exhibition, you will clearly recognize the relationship between ‘development’ and ‘peace’. Small arms are not only dangerous in armed conflict. Even after the end of a war, small arms threaten the development, security, and peace of the people,” Peter Croll gives a clear warning.
BICC provides advice and training programs to international experts and regional actors that are confronted by these problems in their everyday life. Since 2004 BICC, for example, has provided consultancy and training for the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) and members of civil society on disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DD&R) and small arms control issues. In 2006, BICC shifted its efforts to capacity-building through the delivery of targeted training courses for civil society and government officials. The aim of these activities is to promote awareness of the threat of small arms and the importance of control measures at all levels of society, and this in a sustainable manner.
“The Peace and Security Commission (PSC) of the AU and BICC will intensify their cooperation in the future on the fight against the proliferation of SALW in Sub-Saharan Africa,” Peter Croll stresses.
