IMPULSE Café: Changing Climate, Transforming Risks and Shifting Identities
(Im)Mobilities in Times of Uncertainty
Climate change is exposing an increasing number of people around the world to new risks and even threatening the habitability of some regions. While the notion of a massive increase in "climate refugees" is exaggerated, it is important to acknowledge the intricate relationship between climate change and mobility. Mobility has always been a way to cope with environmental crises. However, it also evokes a reorientation of lifestyles and identities, is coupled with new labor relations at destinations and often leads to new patterns of translocal living. There is concerning evidence that many people are immobilized in areas at risk. However, there is also proof of local adaptation and place-making enhancing habitability under conditions of uncertainty.
This session will explore changing climate, transforming risks and shifting identities based on empirical research in South and Central Asia.
