The deployment of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) in Darfur has been stylized on several occasions as a test case for the new African security architecture. However, before the failure of the Mission is attested, this BICC Focus will investigate the background and operating conditions of the Mission. One central question is whether the mandate and the resources available to AMIS suffice to effectively monitor the fragile peace agreement. The effect regarding the role of the Western community of states, whose position in the past three years changed repeatedly between ignorance, delegation of responsibilities to the African Union and humanitarian interventionism, on the conflict must also be critically reviewed.
