Wolf-Christian Paes has more than 13 years of professional experience in the areas of SALW control, security Sector reform (SSR) and DD&R, as well as natural resources and violent conflict gained through a combination of short- and long-term missions in different countries in South eastern Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia, as well as through academic work. He has extensive experience in the development and review of program designs for major development agencies in the areas of SALW control and DD&R. He has conducted project evaluations for different organizations and has developed monitoring and evaluation tools for conflict prevention and recovery projects.

(Academic) education / CV:

Following undergraduate studies in Political Science, Economics and Law at the University of Bonn (1995-1998), Wolf-Christian Paes moved to South Africa to pursue a Masters Degree in International Relations from the University of Stellenbosch (1999). He also holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the Federal University of Public Administration in Speyer (2000). He was awarded scholarships from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International (1998-1999) and the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation (1996-1999).

Wolf-Christian Paes joined the German air force in 1995 after graduating from high school doing voluntary military service for a period of two years serving inter alia with the German Armed Forces Command in Washington, DC and the German Air Force Command in Cologne-Wahn. During his student years (1995-1998), he worked part-time in the air hub operation of United Parcel Service (UPS) at Cologne-Bonn Airport, as well as a lecturer in (Southern) African affairs for a number of institutions (Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation, etc.). In 1998, he was a Program Assistant for a capacity-development project of the Cape Town (South Africa) office of the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation. He has also worked as an electoral observer for the German Foreign Office in South Africa (1994) and Lesotho (1998). In addition to working at BICC, Wolf-Christian teaches regularly at the GIZ Academy of International Cooperation in Bad Honnef and has taught as a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Hamburg, Bonn and Hagen.
