Alexander Horstmann is Associate Professor at the School of Humanities, Tallinn University, Estonia. Before, he used to be Associate Professor at the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Senior Research Fellow at Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Goettingen and Senior Lecturer for Cultural Anthropology in Muenster. He was a Visiting Professor in France, Thailand and Japan.

Alexander did all his fieldwork in Southeast Asia and on Southeast Asian Diasporas in the world. His work was funded by DFG, Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Danish Research Council, Max Planck Institute, Thailand Research Fund. His last research was on the social history of humanitarian assistance to the Karen people in Southeast Myanmar, north-western Thailand and with the resettled communities in the west (2007 to today). He is generally interested in theoretical concepts, ethnographic fieldwork and in a comparative perspective.
