PhD in Social Anthropology/Human Geography 2018

Ester completed her Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Alicante (Spain). After working several years as an interpreter, language teacher and tour guide in the Middle East, she conducted a Masters in International Relations, Safety and Development at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain), with focus in Middle Eastern politics and the role of women in the Egyptian Arab Spring. In 2013, she finished an Erasmus Mundus Master in Migrations and Intercultural Relations at Oldenburg University (Germany), Stavanger University (Norway) and Ahfad University (Sudan), where she focused on the challenges faced by South Sudanese women living in Khartoum after the separation of the two countries. From 2014 till 2018 Ester conducted her joint PhD at the Universities of Maastricht and Aix-Marseille. In her study, ‘Protecting across Borders’, she investigated the transnational social protection of Sudanese migrants in the Netherlands and the UK, and their families back home. After working as a Postdoc lecturer and teacher at Maastricht University, Ester is now part of the research project ‘Trajectories of reintegration: The impacts of forced displacement, migration and return on social change’ at BICC, where she will focus on West Africa.
