Asresahegn Birhanu graduated with a Bachelor and Master from Mekelle University and Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He studied Civic and Ethical Studies and International Relations. He then worked as a lecturer at Wollega University from 2008-2011 and Debre Markos University from 2012 until now. In 2016, He joined the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) of Addis Ababa University for a PhD programme.

Asresahegn Birhanu is conducting research on local integration of refugees and conflict with the host community in Gambella, West Ethiopia. He was invited by the Refugee Studies Centre of Oxford University as a Research visitor in 2019. In relation to his project, he also participated in the joint research project conducted by German Development Institute (DIE), Addis Ababa University, and Jigjiga University in 2020. Since 1st December 2021, he works at BICC as a research fellow in the Project: Forced Migration and Refugee Studies: Networking and Knowledge Transfer.
