As part of the senior management team, Marc von Boemcken as Head of Research coordinates internal research processes and oversees the institute’s conceptual development jointly with the director.

Since January 2021 Marc von Boemcken is the Head of Research at BICC. Marc has been involved in a wide range of research projects at the institute. He worked on arms export control policy and developed the Global Militarization Index (GMI). In 2010 and 2011 Marc conducted field research in Timor-Leste, Liberia and Peru on the impact of private security companies on development-related factors. In 2013, 2014 and 2015 he was co-editor of the annual Peace Report / Friedensgutachten. Between 2015 and 2019 he directed a research project on the everyday ‘securityscapes’ of marginalized groups in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, which was funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Since 2018 Marc coordinates the research project "Preventing radicalization in North-Rhine-Westphalia: How can the capacities of intermediaries be strengthened?" as well as (since 2019) the academic network "CoRE-NRW – Connecting Research on Extremism in North-Rhine-Westfalia", both of which are funded by the Ministry für Culture and Science NRW. Besides working at BICC, Marc also regularly teaches seminars at the Institute of Political Science and Sociology of Bonn University.
