Crisis–Stabilization–Order: Courses of action for the Sahel

Forum International Order in cooperation with BICC on 12 January 2017 organized the public event "Crisis–Stabilization–Order: Courses of action for the Sahel" in Bonn.

The civil wars in the past years in Libya, Mail, the Central African Republic and in Sudan have led to a deep destabilization of the Sahel region. Terror organizations, such as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) or Boko Haram use the collapse of state and societal order to expand their spheres of influence. Organized crime and the illegal trade in weapons, humans, drugs and other goods over badly secured borders of the region also have an extremely destabilizing effect. The illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons exacerbates conflicts and prevents development.

The event "Crisis–Stabilization–Order:  Courses of action for the Sahel" in the framework of the series "Forum international order" deals with the question which courses of action there are in international politics and against the backdrop of the agenda 2030 for sustainable development to contribute to the mid- and long-term stabilization of the region. Experts from all over the world discuss options in the field of arms control and how to achieve Target 16 that seeks to "promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development".
