Discussion: "Bad times for arms control and disarmament?"
With its process “Review 2014”, the German Foreign Office aims to critically review German foreign policy and has asked 50 renowned experts: “Is there anything wrong with German foreign policy and if so, what? The German Foreign Office also participates in public discussions at the local level. BICC has taken this opportunity and has invited the interested public on 4 September to its premises to “inspire German foreign policy” (discussion in German).
Current crises in the Ukraine and the Middle East are the focus of international attention and show clearly the importance of arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation. But beyond such pressing problems and emergency responses in times of crisis, we still need to ask what diplomacy can contribute to finding long-term solutions? Do disarmament negotiations still play an important role today? How can they have an impact on the foreign policy climate? How can an active control of military activities or the destruction or control of weapons contribute to security in regions of crisis?
These and other questions will be discussed by:
· Ambassador Christoph Eichhorn, Deputy Commissioner of the German Federal Government for Arms Control and Disarmament, and
· Professor Dr. Conrad Schetter, Director for Research BICC
Moderator: Alexander Drechsel, Editor, Deutsche Welle
Venue: BICC, Pfarrer-Byns-Str. 1, 53121 Bonn
Date: 4 September 2014
Time: 19.00 bis 20.30 Uhr
