International development: Ideas and Practice
The Center for Development Research (ZEF), the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), and BICC jointly are organizing a seminar series on Risk and Uncertainty for Sustainable Development. The next lecture (27 September 2013) is entitled „International development: Ideas and Practice”.
- Speaker: Dr. David M. Malone, UN Undersecretary General and new Rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo
- Chair: Jakob Rhyner, Director UNU-EHS, Bonn
- Introduction: Joachim von Braun, ZEF-Director
The field of development is one of constant surprises – its reality defies the most confident policy prescriptions. The range of alternative policies is dizzying, and how they will fare in given circumstances unpredictable. Certain basics are helpful, but even these are open to question in different geographic and social environments.
David Malone’s remarks will draw on life-long experience in developing countries and a career of frequently working on development programming and policy. In passing, they will contrast the development tracks on India and China after 1979.
Time and place:
2.30 p.m. - 4.00 p.m. at ZEF (ground floor right conference room)
