"Preventing the diversion of small arms and ammunition"
The UN Programme of Action (PoA) laid the foundation for action countering the illicit trade and uncontrolled circulation of small arms and light weapons at the national, regional and global levels. In accordance with the two-year cycle of PoA meetings, the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States will take place in New York from 16 to 20 June 2014. BICC will participate in an Extra informal Meeting of the Group of Interested States (GIS) on practical disarmament measures at the German House, New York.
On Wednesday, 18 June BICC researchers and advisors will present various ongoing SALW projects at a side event during the Fifth Biennial Meeting of States to Consider Implementation of the PoA (BMS5) at the German House. The side event “Preventing the diversion of small arms and ammunition: Global, regional and national approaches” is jointly organized by BICC and the Bundeswehr Verification Center. Lars Wirkus is going to present the current status of the interactive SALW-Guide. Wolf-Christian Paes, Nikhil Acharya and Luuk van de Vondervoort will give insights into current civilian arms control efforts in Darfur and the sub-region. Highlights of the latter part are the premiere of the documentary movie "A Call for Arms - community security & arms control in Darfur" as well as first-hand information on cross-border efforts of SALW control by the Sub-region Arms Control Mechanism (SARCOM).
