Science Night with facts and figures on war and peace

BICC (Bonn International Center for Conversion) is participating in the Bonn Science Night on 23 May 2014. In the ‘Blue Grotto’ of Bonn University, BICC will present the digital information portal ‘War and Peace’ which it has developed in association with the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb). ‘Digital Society’ is the motto of the Science Night 2014 which thus takes into account the topic of the Science Year 2014 of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The bpb online portal that will be presented by BICC researchers at their stand provides all information primarily via interactive maps that are complemented by graphs and texts. The articles in the collection of facts, written by researchers in a language that is commonly understood, the comprehensive glossary, the detailed country portraits and the list of sources, grouped according to topics offer further in-depth background information.

The online portal offers seven thematic modules:

·         War and violent conflicts,

·         Peace and demobilization,

·         Military capacities and means,

·         Natural resources and conflicts,

·         Conventional weapons,

·         Weapons of mass destruction,

·         Arms control.

At the Science Night, BICC experts offer assistance to all those who are interested in trying this portal out, in linking information and map windows across all modules and in accessing the facts and figures. Those eager to test their knowledge immediately can participate in a quiz. Not only the feedback button of the portal but also BICC staff at the stand are open for suggestions and criticism from the users. You will find the BICC stand in the 'Blue Grotto'.

The Bonn Science Night is a joint event financed and organized by the city of Bonn, the Rhine-Sieg District, District Ahrweiler, Bonn University, German Museum Bonn and the Science Museum Bonn.

The program for the 9th Science Night is constantly brought up-to-date.
