Sensitization Meeting on the Implementation of ECOWAS Convention in Banjul, Gambia

On 24 October 2018, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and its Small Arms Division with technical support by the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) held a high-level sensitization meeting with national authorities in the Gambia on the implementation of the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Their Ammunition and Other Related Materials (2006).

In attendance were also experts from the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) to support ECOWAS and to discuss avenues of further supporting national authorities in implementing the ECOWAS Convention. Discussions evolved around the re-activation of the Gambian National Commission on SALW as control mechanism and harmonization of Gambian legislation with the ECOWAS Convention as well as other international obligations, such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) or the Firearms Protocol.

This meeting was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) as part of the project ‘Capacity Development and Advice on SALW Control in Africa’ (2018-2020) implemented by BICC.
