Validation workshop for the East Africa Chapter of the Silencing the Guns Plan of Action in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia

To validate the content of the East Africa Chapter, a meeting was held on 1 and 2 November 2018 at the headquarters of the African Union in Addis Abeba. This meeting gathered Member States from the East Africa Region, the relevant Regional Economic Communities and Regional Bodies and Implementing Agencies. One meeting session was also reserved for discussions with donors.

The objective of the workshop, which was conducted in partnership with the African Union and the German Federal Foreign Office, was to validate the East African Chapter of the Silencing the Guns Programme of Action (STG-PoA).The STG-PoA contains chapters for each geographic region in Africa. The chapter covering eastern Africa outlines SALW needs and priorities in the following issue areas: Marking, record-keeping, and tracing, physical security and stockpile management (PSSM), craft production, import, export and transit, legislative and regulatory frameworks, national coordination mechanisms, criminal justice response, brokering and end-use/r controls, embargo enforcement, registration and voluntary disarmament, cross-border cooperation, weapons and ammunition management in peace support operations, evidence and data collection, and universality and outreach.
