Workshop "Conversion for the city of the future"

On 19 May, BICC held the transdisciplinary expert workshop on "Former urban military sites—Conversion for the city of the future" at the Universitätsforum Bonn.

The first focus was on the heritage value and the value of remembrance of former military sites. The second focus was on the potential of conversion sites for inclusive urban development, which also incorporates accommodation for refugees.
Professor Ingrid Scheurmann, TU Dortmund / German Foundation for Monument Protection (Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz) gave the keynote address on "Conversion and Reinterpretation" and spoke about societal transformation processes and their influence on monuments and monument preservation. In her introduction, Susanne Heinke, BICC, presented on the conversion of former urban military sites in the context of peace and conflict research.
About 40 experts, researchers from various disciplines, practitioners, such as the Managing Director of NRW.Urban, Franz Meiers, or Axel Kunze, member of the executive committee of the Institute for Federal Real Estate (Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben) took part in the transdisciplinary event. In the closing panel, Joachim Neuser, Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Dr Jocelyn Mawdsley, University of Newcastle, wrapped up the discussion.
