Pakistan – Land of the Extremes

On 18 September 2013, Conrad Schetter will present his latest book entitled “Pakistan –Land of the Extremes” (in German) in cooperation with the Center for Development Research (ZEF) and the Crossroads Asia Project.

Its opposites make Pakistan a fascinating country: Alongside the “official” Islam, the colourful folk Islam constitutes an enigmatic world of its own. Numerous tribes and ethnic groups insist on their independence. What is more, a host of political conflicts keep the country in suspense, ranging from the dispute with India over the Kashmir region, clashes with militant Islamists, to tensions between the military and democracy. How to govern such a country? What holds it together? How was it established? Katja Mielke and Conrad Schetter provide an expert introduction to the “Land of the Pure”. All the while, their multifaceted portrait is a declaration of sympathy for a unique country of extremes.

Conrad Schetter will present the book at ZEF, Walter-Flex-Straße 3, 53113 Bonn, beginning at 18:00 hrs. The presentation will be followed by a discussion.

Please make sure to register for the panel discussion with Susanne Heinke, Head of Public Relations.
