Update of BICC’s Interactive SALW Guide
BICC’s Interactive Guide on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) is being updated. To assist in this process, national representatives from all over the world are currently validating BICC’s data on the whereabouts of the most commonly used SALW in violent conflicts.
The SALW Guide is an English-language database on small arms and light weapons, which BICC has developed in close cooperation with the Verification Center of the Bundeswehr (ZVBw) with funding from the German Foreign Office (AA). Among other things, the Guide aims to answer questions like what types of small arms and light weapons can be found in which countries; where and which types of small arms are produced by which country; and how to distinguish different categories and even types of small arms and light weapons from one another .
A newly developed poster showcases the main purpose of the Guide: to identify, share data, and increase global knowledge and transparency on SALW holdings.
After the update a newer and more intuitive version of the Guide will be launched around the time of the sixth biennial meeting of states (BMS6) on the UN Programme of Action on small arms and light weapons in New York, 6-10 June 2016.
