Release date: 1997-12

With the conversion survey 1998, the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC)presents its third yearbook. This year's edition lays emphasis on the worldwide process of adaptation of the defense industries-downsizing, concentration and conversion-to drastically reduced military expenditures and on the dramatic decline in employment. In addition to this, the authors give an overview of current trends in international disarmament and conversion. The BIC3D Index, which has now become a standard feature of BICC yearbooks, has been updated. It combines data on military expenditures, weapon holdings, armed forces personnel, and employment in arms production and results in a listing of countries according to their success in disarmament. Germany now ranks tenth in a field of 157 countries. Central statement of the disarmament report: the trend of global disarmament has slowed down, but it has not stopped.
