Release date: 2010-08

This Occasional Paper analyzes the photographic reporting of the German daily newspapers Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) and Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) about the Gaza war (2008/2009).This paper is based on the assumption that photographic reporting as photojournalistic war photography represents a special kind of media construction of reality, which constructs medium-specific ‚pictures’. This analysis is embedded in a description of the meaning of photography for war and crisis reporting as well as an elaboration of how special photography is as a carrier of memory. Furthermore, the production context in which the photographs were taken is shown; this information was used to categorize the results of the qualitative study.
