Base conversion and weapons destruction

BICC continues its longstanding work on base conversion. Having defined military bases as means of organized violence, BICC conducts research on consequences and possible conflicts that might accompany such conversion processes.
It also makes available a unique academic expertise in base and industrial conversion (re-use of sites, effects on the job market as well as regional and community urban planning) to the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and its communities.
As conversion of arms and ammunition to civilian use is rare, destruction remains the major option. Here, too, BICC is interested in the effects of different practices of weapons disposal. It asks by what means dangerous situations resulting from this—both for the security of the population and the environment—can be avoided.
