Use of violence

Ahmed Khalifa, Protests during Parliamentary elections, Cairo 2011

BICC intends to critically examine how direct violence shapes—and is shaped by—the concrete behavior of actors (perpetrators and victims) involved. This topic in particular shows BICC’s strong desire to understand the various interlinkages of organized violence with a given social order. Practices of direct violence vary over time and space, in line with changes in the concepts and means of organized violence. The use of violence is highly diverse as examples like drone attacks and rape as a weapon of war, investigated by BICC, show.
