Navigating the Field in Afghanistan Post-2021

Epistemological Reflections on Infrastructure (re)Construction and Development Efforts

The De:link//Re:link Brown Bag Talks concentrate on a specific areas of research, both from guests and associated researchers, thus offering a platform for synergies under the umbrella of the project’s own research orientation.

At the next brown bag talk on 15 January 2026 at 13:00 CET, bicc Senior Researcher Katja Mielke will share insights from her recent research on post-2021 Afghanistan. Four years after the regime change in 2021, Afghanistan remains a highly politicised and uncertain research environment. Taking the De:Link//Re:Link project’s interest in the effects of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a point of departure, this talk addresses two interrelated themes. First, it presents recent research insights into the viability and limits of China’s engagement in Afghanistan. Second, it invites critical reflection on the conditions and challenges of knowledge production in highly politicised and uncertain research contexts.
