Policies, Practices and Experiences of Return and Reintegration
Evidence from the GAPs and RE-MIG Projects
The projects “Return and Belonging after Conflict-induced Displacement” (RE-MIG) and “De-centring the Study of Migrant Returns and Readmission Policies in Europe and Beyond” (GAPs) cordially invite you to the Final Project Roundtable:
Policies, Practices and Experiences of Return and Reintegration—
Evidence from the GAPs and RE-MIG Projects
Date: 25 February 2026
Time: 10:00‒15:00
Location: Gustav-Stresemann-Institut e.V., Langer Grabenweg 68, Bonn-Bad Godesberg
Return has become a central pillar of European and international migration governance. Yet, return policies and practices often remain misaligned with realities on the ground, the capacities of origin countries, and the lived experiences, aspirations and agency of migrants themselves.
The GAPs and RE-MIG projects address this disconnect from complementary analytical and empirical perspectives. Bringing together findings from both projects, this final roundtable moves beyond project-by-project presentations and instead fosters a joint, thematic reflection on return across different stages of the process: pre-return, return and post-return. The discussion will bring into dialogue returning states’ perspectives, migrants’ and diaspora actors’ experiences and origin countries’ positions, aiming to identify tensions and gaps and explore how these can be addressed through more informed, inclusive and context-sensitive policy approaches.
